Jesus Is Watching

By David Jenkins

Better eat you peas, Jesus is watching.

Better sit up straight, Jesus is watching.

Better obey your mother, Jesus is watching.

Better not cry, Jesus is watching.

I said, “Sit up straight!” Jesus is watching.

Jesus is watching.

not as nosy accountant or uninvited voyouer,

not as a tongue clucker or finger wagger

Jesus is watching.

not as cop on duty or grey-haired busybody.

Jesus watches as:

Prodigal Father

Tender Shepherd

Unmerited Friend

Jesus does not peek through keyholes.

He follows us into

our darkened rooms …

our private hells …

our beds of our own making …

He watches us with magnetic eyes.

He watches and waits

He watches and waits … there is no time limit,

there is no “Eventually I will stop watching.”

He only watches with love.

He only watches with the hope

that we

will return His glance.
